Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum review

The House of Guerlain has formidable experience and history with fragrance. Recently they unveiled Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire (The Little Black Dress) Eau de Parfum. I received a small sample vial in my recent Sephora order and couldn't wait to take a whiff.

Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire Eau de Parfum smells of cherry and incense. It opens up with a ripe black cherry that treads a line between juicy and medicinal. The cherry is followed by a smoky continuum of smoked tea, patchouli, and licorice. My mind switches back and forth between loving the smoked tea and wrinkling my nose at the incense like scent of patchouli. The rose's contribution is soft and mostly overshadowed by the other scents.

Overall, Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire is decidedly young due to the cherry, with added sophistication due to the smokiness. It's like a youthful foray into a more alternative and experimental world. Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire was as cool and unexpected as I was hoping for it to be. However, the scent  may be too interesting to please a general crowd. If you have access to a tester, I would say it's worth a sniff at the very least. Thanks for reading! Have you tried Guerlain La Petite Robe Noire? What scents of samples have you tried lately?

Love, Dovey

  1. Thanks for the review, Dovey! La Petite Robe Noire is definitely a scent that grew on me. When I sniffed it for the first couple of times I thought: nah, no way. However, after those couple of times I can't wait to try it on! I'll keep you posted about what I think :)

    1. Hi Sunny, I'd love to hear what you think over time! When I wore it, I didn't want to take it off, even though I didn't like some aspects of it. It's a nice fragrance to be sure.

  2. You're on a roll with these, Dovey. :) I dislike cherry very much so this probably wouldn't be to my liking. I love the cute little graphics it has though!

    1. Haha, Thanks Maggie; I have so many scents I've wanted to review that they've snowballed into one time. I also liked the imagery; it's more creative than what one typically sees in a perfume leaflet.

  3. I love the concept and the LBD theme but took a cursory whiff and didn't click with it. There are a few Guerlain fragrances that I love and am hoping to discover more eventually!

    1. Hi Liz, I haven't spent much time with the other Guerlains; I figure it's probably better to stay away as long as possible! However, after this, I'm more inclined to go back and take more whiffs :)

  4. hmmm I keep forgetting to sniff this in store lol. There was another guerlain perfume i really liked a few years ago. maybe samsara or the lighter shalimar? I don't know. In any event i love the aqua allegoria line too - mandarin basilic is so fresh and often a summer favorite

    2. oh, I really LOVE this scent. When it comes to perfume, I kinda feel lonely, lol, because everytime I love a scent, no one near me likes it (but I have to say, what's weird, people are commenting how good I smell but once I tell them what it is, they tell me that they don't like the smell on themself and never would have thought this is 'the' perfume they tested, haha) / Claire.

  6. I think you put in a lot of effort to sniff this scent and I love the packaging and concept but I was rather disappointed when I finally smelled it. To me, it's the most ordinary of Geurlain's scents but it could be that I'm also not a fan of patchouli.... But love your photo as always!!

  7. I would probably hate the opening scent of cherries but I am a sucker for incense and patchouli. This might be worth at least a whiff! Great review.

  8. Received the sample pack from Sephora. It is an intriguing scent, kind of hypnotic and a throw back to a time before (like silent film star before). The initial spritz is somewhat off putting because it is very sweet, and I never was a fan of patchouli...but I keep smelling my wrist. Think I will get the one ounce, at least that's how I feel at the moment.....weird how much I have switched my position with regard to La Petite Robe Noire. I think I a more worried about how I will smell to others (shrug). Loved reading the reviews, good, bad, in between...but never indifferent :)
