NARS Trouville nail polish review

It was refreshing to see a wearable pink on the NARS Summer 2012 lineup. Often NARS is quite daring with nail polish colors, and I've safely passed on a number of them. NARS Trouville nail polish is described as a seashell pink. The color relates to its namesake village, Trouville, a fishing village in Normandy (northwestern France).

I was drawn in by the description of 'seashell pink', however when I received my bottle, I was surprised. I did not see the soft pink found along the edges of a conch or fan-shaped shell. In my opinion Trouville is way too bright to be considered 'seashell'. Trouville is a bright yellow pink creme nail polish. I would say it falls somewhere in between a pastel and a candy color. My swatch of NARS Trouville below is pretty accurate, though in low lighting the color looks cooler and more candy colored. The formula is a bit thick and despite that two coats are required. The drying time is reasonable. In general, I like the glossy finish that NARS formulas dry down to.

For a color comparison, I've photographed NARS Trouville next to NARS Vestale (reviewed here) and NARS Orgasm nail polish. Please keep in mind that in the strong sunlight, the colors tend to appear slightly warmer and more vibrant.

Finally, I've made some comparison swatches of the above bottles and the closest pink I could find. Most of the pink nail colors I have tend to be cool pinks or pale pinks; it was hard finding something similar to Trouville in my collection. You can see that the NARS Vestale swatch is much paler and more muted; Trouville looks more candy colored in comparison. NARS Orgasm nail polish is significantly more peach. L'Oreal Trust Fund Baby, a mid toned pink, shows the slightly pastel character NARS Trouville.

NARS Trouville is a bit of an enigma. Although I'm uncertain of whether I like the color up close,  it turns out very nicely in photographs and when seen from further away, like in the context of an outfit. I don't really have a color like this in my collection, so I consider this a worthwhile buy. I will porbably get more use out of Trouville when summer truly rolls in.

Are you planning on adding NARS Trouville to your collection? What are some of your favorite yellow-pink nail colors? What kind of pinks do you like?

Love, Dovey.

  1. That's a pretty pink perfect for the Summer. Well Indian Summer for me since our Summer is technically late Fall :)

Good luck on the Allure competition. You're representing NARS - awesome! You know how much I love me some NARS! hahaha

    1. Hi Lexi, Thank you so much! How could I not rep for us NARS-issists? <3 For a moment I toyed with the idea of using a non-NARS product for my favorite, but it just didn't make sense!

  2. I don't know why but I don't have a single Nars nail polish, eventhough I love the colours they have. I have many reds and berries but barely pinks in my collection. this one seems very subtle and nice. as much as I love vivid reds I really like subtle pinks. I still wish you good luck for the competition! I hope you win :)

    1. Thank you Claire! It took a while for me to accumulate a few NARS Polishes. The selection is still quite small compared to most lines!

  5. i want the whole line up of NARS summer 2012 polishes... but that most likely won't happen... I'll be swatching and decide on 1 or 2... this shade looks like it might be a contender :)

    1. Hi Lucy, me too! I agonized for quite a while before deciding upon this as one of the few things I was definitely getting :)

  6. That is a pretty pink but I agree with you - it doesn't look like what I think of as seashell pink. Have already started voting for you in the Allure Blogger Awards! Fingers crossed!

    1. Hi Kristi- thank you so muuch, you've been so kind to me! I'm glad you agree on the seashell pink part. It shouldn't really make a difference in my opinion of the color, but I guess I'm a stickler for color!

  7. I actually really like this one because it is so cheerfully bright ;) And the bright, bright colors that NARS has put out recently have me totally resenting my ban! They look so beautiful!

  8. That's very pretty! Orgasm also looks lovely in your swatches. I'm really into bright nail colours at the moment, so have been wearing a lot of hot pinks. I could do with a few more subtle pinks like this one! I also voted for you in the Allure Blogger Awards. Good luck again! :)

  9. I typically avoid pink polishes because I find that most shades of pink aren't all that flattering on my nails.

Trouville is definitely a must have though ... it just seems different.

    1. Hi Jessica, I had no idea! I'm curious to hear what colors you normally wear. I think you're quite right about Trouville being 'different' though :)

  10. I am definitely thinking of getting this, but I need to see it in person first. It looks so pink online (especially on Amy of Cafe Makeup), but I absolutely cannot handle any yellow in my nail polish. I love roses and my pinks need to be blue based or muted with white. So Chanel Ballerina is my best pink and my best pinky roses are butter LONDON Dahling and Revlon Teak Rose. Two other great pinks for my pinkish skin are Chanel May 535 and Mica Rose 495. I can also get away with the slightly peachier Tendresss 507 if I apply one coat, two at most. Any more than that and the warmth in it overtakes my skin. L'Oreal Trust Fund Baby looks really good to me.

    1. Hi Zuzu, It sounds like the more delicate and cooler the better! All of the shades you listed are beautiful! I imagine they'd look so pretty lined up in a drawer or on a dresser. I'm not familiar with Dahling though and will have to look that one up. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts when you do get a chance to try trouville!

  11. Trouville looks really nice on you. I actually really love all three of the NARs polishes. They're so pretty! Totally want to get Orgasm; I definitely don't have anything like that in my nail polish collection.

    1. Hi C, thank you! Good observation with O--- I never thought about it, but actually the number of shades similar to it are slim or nonexistant! I should really wear it more often :)

  12. Very pretty! I wouldn't think much of it just from seeing the bottle to be honest, but it is very soft & feminine on the nails. Perfect for Spring/Summer!
    P.s.: I voted for you !

  14. I think this might be the first NARS polish shade I buy...something about it just seems too pretty for me to resist! I'm a little put off by the formula, but I think this will be a shade I reach for fairly often, so I hope it makes up for it. Thanks for the review and comparison :)
