NARS Storm Bird nail polish review + swatches

NARS Storm Bird nail polish is swooping onto counters this Fall 2012. With a name like Storm Bird, one can imagine the shadowed wingspan of a seabird riding the gusts of a storm. It's really nice imagery for a grey polish.

The formula of NARS Storm Bird seems to be consistent with NARS cream nail polishes. It's smooth and pigmented. Depending on how much you pick up with the brush, the color becomes opaque in 1-2 coats. The brush is attached to the large square head which seems unwieldy, but works fine for me. The brush is rounded and not paddle shaped.
NARS Storm Bird nail polish is a medium grey creme. It's a balanced neutral, though it may lean ever so slightly blue. Grey is not a particularly new color; if you remember last fall NARS released the dark grey-blue nail polish NARS Galion. NARS Galion is significantly more blue and darker than NARS Storm Bird. I believe Deborah Lippman Stormy Weather is darker than NARS Storm Bird.

I'm glad I held out on last year's dark greys and went for NARS Storm Bird nail polish this season. I like how it's close to neutral, and is a mid-tone grey. I prefer this to greys that are too dark or too light. Although NARS Storm Bird seems like a color more suited towards fall, I've already made good use of it this week as a pedi. The slight blue tones look nice when paired with nude sandals and dark skinny jeans. Thanks for reading! Have you picked up anything from NARS Fall 2012? What's your favorite grey polish?

Love, Dovey.

    Love the feathers Dovey!
I tried this the other day on one nail in the store, and loved it. I didn't get it, but I'm still thinking about it! It really is a perfect grey!

    1. Thank you Tracy! Grey is a fall color and it's still summer. Plenty of time to think on it :)

I like how you make your product images so much more interesting. Favorite is still the zygomatic/cheek bone image. I love the color grey as a neutral for clothes and accessories but I haven't found a shade that would enhance my sallow skintone for nails...kind of like the greiges...seems to only look good for those who are very pale or dark, but not intermediate folks. At least I don't think so.

    1. Thank you fairytales and coffee! Greys and greiges can be tricky, depending on how much yellow and blue are present. I like this one since it's closer to neutral/blue.

  5. Great pictures as usual, Dovey! I haven't got to see NARS fall in person, but there are some pieces that I'm really interested in. I am a little skeptical about gray nail polishes working on me (I think my undertone is really pretty strongly yellow), but this looks great on you! So sophisticated!

    1. Thank you sunny! I hope you get to see more; there are definitely greys out there that don't flatter my skin tone. This is my first medium grey purchase :)

Lovely pics Dovey! And this rich shade of grey has me rethinking my "no high-end polishes" rule. It really is a beautiful Fall shade and will go with everything!

  7. What great pictures Dovey! I have a Zoya nail polish that seems similar (Kelly) and as much as I was scared of grey nails - I love them! not as much as my beloved reds but still, a pretty good option. I yet have to try Nars nail polishes, they have some pretty colour stories.

  9. Fantastic pics Dovey! I have one gray polish - Zoya Freja. It is a medium gray with shimmer. It doesn't lean as blue as Storm Bird. I love a good creme polish! But I know I won't wear gray often enough to warrant a second gray in my collection.

    1. Hi Kristi, Oooh, I haven't seen Freja yet; it took me a while to get a gray since they are so difficult to pick from!

I like this grey and have a lot of grey polishes. They're so dramatic and moody for winter!

    1. Hi MaiBug, I'm always tempted! NARS polishes tend to grow on me over time even if I don't reach for them often at first!
