Quick and Cool

I've been doing a number of fragrance posts lately, so I thought it would be a good time to sniff the proverbial coffee beans and cleanse my palate with a makeup post. Here are a selection of products I've started to work into my routine.

For the face, I'm using NARS Sheer Glow in Santa Fe as my summer color. (I finally bought the NARS Foundation pump). I've started using my MAKE UP FOR EVER HD primer underneath, because my foundation wasn't lasting as long as I'd prefer. Primers often make me break out (it's probably the silicone), and I'll have to keep an eye on how much I can get away with without wrecking my skin. Laura Mercier Peach Whisper blush is what I've been pairing with my cooler toned eyeshadows. The matte peach keeps things summery and not too serious. For eyes, I'm favoring cooler tones again as we edge towards fall. Two quick and easy-to-wear cream shadows that are on my vanity include Smashbox 15 Hour Wear Cream Shadow in Stone and Maybelline 24 Hr. Color Tattoo in Audacious Asphalt. I've also been loving the colors of MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Shadow in 4E (a grey taupe) and 20E a rosy taupe (reviewed here*). Because the colors are a little bolder, I've gone back to NARS Coconut Grove eyeshadow (reviewed here) as my brow color since darker eye makeup requires darker brows. Smashbox Blackout eyeshadow has been useful lately for lining.

Overall, my palette is leaning towards cooler colors using quick and long-wearing cream shadows. Thanks for reading! What tones have you been favoring lately?

Love, Dovey.

  1. You have a lot of great items here. As always your pictures are amazing! I'm really lemming for some of the MUF Aquatic Shadows, especially 20E. I also use Nars Sheer Glow in Santa Fe. I really need to get the pump and have been contemplating buying a primer. I need something that will make my foundation last longer, especially for my sisters upcoming wedding, but I worry about it causing me to break out. Please let me if the MUF primer ends up breaking you out or not.

    1. Hi RileyMariesMom, Thank you so much! I think MUFE 20E is one of the more popular colors for good reason; it's less harsh and transitions better with skin! What a coincidence that we both use Santa Fe. Somehow the color really works for me :) I'll try to write an update about the MUFE. I think it's relatively good for a silicone primer (I've tried a few), but I get a few breakouts still. I think if I pat it on, as opposed to rubbing, the primer will sit more in the surface and not lodge in my pores as easily? Congrats on your sister's upcoming wedding. How exciting!

    2. I'm debating between getting a primer, setting spray, or setting powder for the wedding. I don't think I'll have time for touch ups, and I want my makeup looking nice all day. I'm not sure what out of those products would have the least chance of breaking me out. I like your suggestion of patting on the primer, not rubbing in it. That might help. I guess I should also get a good makeup remover and acne cleanser, because that might help. I look forward to reading your review, if you get to it, of the MUFE primer.

    3. I thought about this too after reading your comment; I think primer probably is the most effective, but I know people love MAC fix+ (which I still have yet to try). I would think that setting sprays would be less breakout prone since they're layered on top of your foundation. There's the travel size too, in case you use it once and never use it again! I like to use good clay mask to try and draw out impurities if I wore primer + significant makeup that day too!

  2. I've been liking the MUFE primer, Aqua Shadow, and Maybelline 24-hour Color Tattoos as well! I don't have many cool colors (with my warm undertone I don't really reach out for them as much as I reach out for no-brainer shades like warm golds and browns), though I do enjoy them from time to time :)

    1. Hi Sunny, ah, the same thing! I loved the recent long-wear post you did with them! I'm a bit warm right now due to a tan, so the cooler colors aren't working for me as well as in the winter, but it doesn't keep me from trying! :P

  3. How do you blend the cream shadows together on your eyes? I always find this a problem!

    1. Hi Baby in a Corner, I know what you mean. Creams are not as blendable as a powder product, especially the long-wear ones. I guess what happens is I don't do much blending. I'll usually apply with a finger and pat (as opposed to swipe) color on the eye sheerly so it will transition better at the edges. Then I go back in and layer on color more thickly at the non-transition areas!

  4. I'm starting to go for rosy or plum lips... but still with that sheer, summer-friendly bent. Still being very lazy w/ eye makeup!

  6. If I continually use silicone based primers my skin gets nasty too :( My everyday primer doesn't have any, yay! I love the colours you're wearing, very beautiful. I am in the mood for darker eye colours at the moment as well.

    1. Hi Emma, I need to ask you what primer you're using, because I love the longwearing aspect but hate the breakouts! I'm glad we're on the same eye makeup wavelength too :)

  10. I really want to try those Smashbox cream shadows. Also, I settled on Smashbox Studio Skin for my wedding, but now I might look into NARS Sheer Glow again...sigh. Having to buy the pump separately is very annoying though, isn't it? :P

    1. Hi Larie, YAY for choosing a foundation. I always think its happy when one has more than one good choice. I wasn't happy about having to buy the pump, even though I love how well it works!

  11. The collection of colors you've put together here is incredibly soothing and really evocative of the transition from summer to autumn. Added the wish list: Coconut Grove (should have bought this years ago), Stone and Peach Whisper!

    1. Hi Becca, YAY. I love matte peach. It's always subtle but adds the 'blush' when you don't want much actual blush!

  15. Love cream shadows, they are super easy and I like using my fingers to apply makeup anyway. I am loving MUFE F&B foundation and Lush Emotional Brillance e/s in Sophisticated. I also like using greens and aqua colors for eyes lately.

  16. Gorgeous color palette! I am so ready for the cooler weather - I've already pulled out some plummier lip colors. Even wore NARS Sin the other day! Adding Stone to my wishlist - what a lovely cool toned brown!
