New year, new favorites

When the clock struck twelve on New Year's eve, my my mind hit a makeup reset button. I found myself reaching for natural and fresh tones. Here is what I used the most during January:

1. Urban Decay Naked 2 palette - I've used this palette almost every single day since I purchased it in early January. My most used colors include Bootycall, Tease, Pistol, Chopper, Snakebite, and Busted. (See my NAKED2 review and swatches here)
2. OPI Tickle my France-y (review and swatch here)
3. OPI Bubble Bath - Bubble bath gives my nail a sheer and polished finish.
4. Revlon Sugar Frosting lip butter -This was my first lip butter love and it did not disappoint.
5. Revlon Strawberry Shortcake lip butter is a fresh and cool pink (review and swatches here)
6. Maybelline Dream Bouncy blush in Orchid Hush - I love the slight lavender tones (review and swatches here)

7. NARS Concealer in Vanilla - I like to carry this around in my purse to cover up blemishes during the day. I like that it's not reflective and can be used for purposes other than under-eye concealing.
8. NARS Mayflower lipstick - a sheer strawberry pink
9. NARS Belle de Jour lipstick - a sheer peachy nude
10. Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Smoke - I'm experimenting with this as an eyebrow color.

The colors remind me of multicolored pebbles bathed in cold water of a New England beach. I think they'd look great with a striped nautical shirt, don't you think? I guess my imagination is in the mood for traveling lately. What sort of color palette do you find yourself reaching for in the new year? Have you been traveling at all this winter? Thanks for reading!

Love, Dovey.

Is there such a thing as blogging kindred spirits?

  2. hi, Dovey!
    thanks for sharing.
i love looking at your swatches and reading your interpretation on colors.
when i was young, i was never a good art student but loved collecting crayons and tubes of water colors.
i don't know if it makes sense but your blog satisfies my needs(?) to look at pretty color palettes. :)

    1. Hi Lena - thank you so much for your nice comment; it was really so nice to hear how you think of things. I can also relate to collecting art supplies. I always loved those big boxes of crayons (12 is not nearly enough!). Maybe that's why we both love makeup now? :)

  3. I've been reaching for neutrals, too - natural neutrals ;) Gray, champagne, soft peaches, soft roses for lips. Curious to know how Smoke works out as your brow color! I'm looking for one, too.

    1. I like the sound of champagne, peach, and rose! Both yummy and lovely. Smoke is kind of working out; it's really dark in the pan but it's a sheer-ish color. It's cooler than NARS Coconut grove which is more brown. I think I'd like something in between the two. Have you tried MAC concrete? or Charcoal brown? (or even copperplate?) I think those work for darker brows too. I don't have them in my collection, but want to try them when I get a chance.

  4. Loving my Naked 2 as well! Pistol is my favourite shade and makes that palette so worth it.
Nice faves! I have yet to try a NARS lipstick.

    1. Hi Tracy- I remember reading your post on pistol! That made me smile. I like the NARS sheer lippies because they feel so lightweight.

  5. Loving seeing your favorites! How is the stick concealer? I have tried every Sephora, the online site, and NARS themselves and they are all out of my shade so I am curious to see what the hub bub is! lol

    1. Are you talking about Custard? If so I will eventually need that one too. Vanilla is really pale and pretty much for winter. To be honest I don't have a lot of experience with undereye concealers because I can get away (mostly) without them. I don't think it's magical but it does the job. The important thing for me is the lack of reflection since I want to use it for two purposes and not just the eye. It doesn't dry out my undereye area or blemishes (ie no scaly skin) and the coverage is good enough for me. I also feel like creams can be layered better than liquids (but that's just a guess)

  7. I'm definitely feeling this palette. Last year I didn't want anything to do with soft colours until March, but it must be the unusually mild winter we're experiencing here in Toronto. Right now I'm all about almost whites with just a slight touch of colour, not quite pastel.

    1. I've seen the creams and pink-whites on your blog; they're really so clean and pretty for winter! I really like the softer tones of Naked 2, too. Also--- I didn't realize Canadians spelled colors with the extra u :)

  8. I'm on the verge of getting the Naked 2. So tempting! I think this is the first positive thing I'm hearing about the Dream Bouncy blush. I kinda just want to get it to feel it! haha

    1. Hi Jess; I was on the verge for quite a long time myself! I think the Dream bouncy blushes really will depend on the person. I like my blush sheer and blendable so they're great for me. Since I'm allergic to many blushes, I'm also short on options, so it made the Dream Bouncy blushes even more appealing to me!

  13. You have such a lovely way with words. I've never quite heard colors described as "multicolored pebbles bathed in cold water of a New England beach" but it is quite apt :) I think I might have to look into making that Naked 2 palette mine after reading your review just now.

  14. Nice favs! I don't think I've ever seen Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Smoke. Funny how the thought process goes, as I have just started experimenting with BB Slate for my brows. I was also happy to see Revlon up there, since my first experience with them was a very happy surprise.

I love the imagery of pebbles!

    1. Hi Zuzu! Thank you for your comment. I came to know about Smoke because it was in one of my old limited edition palettes. I used it so often that I figured I should buy the full size! I don't think I have slate--- but I remember it being a quite beautiful color as well (plus it's one of those rock-based names like rock, flint, slate.... that never seem to disappoint!)
