May 2012 makeup favorites - travel edition

I was out of town most of May, so my favorites are essentially what I took along with me to Hawaii. All my makeup items were packed in my trusty leather Coach cosmetics case that I 'borrowed' from my mom a while back. My large tortoiseshell patterned sunglasses from Target are also favorite worthy; they were well loved during the entire trip. The ones pictured here are actually new, but otherwise identical. The original pair is lying at the bottom of a zip-line ravine in Hawaii after falling out of my pocket. (This is both case and point as to why I stick with affordable sunnies only!)

There were a few considerations that came in to play when choosing what to take with me. The lack of free-checked bags on our airline meant a more pared down list. Essentials included NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Deauville, NARS Smudgeproof eyeshadow primer, NARS Coconut Grove eyeshadow (reviewed here), NARS Trouville nail polish (reviewed here) and NARS lipsticks in Mayflower and Belle de Jour. The Urban Decay NAKED2 palette (reviewed here) had all the eyeshadow colors I needed in one package. Because of the warm climate, I tried to bring more drugstore items to avoid exposing my nicer pieces to heat. Revlon lip butters in Sweet Tart and Cotton Candy and Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blushes in Pink Plum, Rose Petal, Coffee Cake, and Fresh Pink (reviewed here and here) are among my favorite drugstore items. Finally, since it's summer and I planned on swimming, I made sure my eyeliner and mascara were waterproof. I love both NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara and Urban Decay 24/7 waterproof liquid eyeliner. I tested both before, so I know they'll both waterproof and sweat-proof. I think this is a key point when evaluating 'waterproof' makeup. Many 'waterproof' items may not come off in pure water, but when your face gets sweaty and/or oily, they'll melt off right away!

Finally, here's a photo of my Bobbi Brown Brush case that I use to carry my brushes and combs. It's a handy zip-close case that has elasticized pockets to keep things in. Thanks for reading! Do you have any vacation makeup tips? Do you change your selection depending on the location?

Love, Dovey.

  1. I try SO hard to scale down my makeup necessities when travelling. Sometimes, IT JUST ISN'T POSSIBLE! Haha! I'll be going to California in about 3 months, and my husband says I GOTTA SCALE DOWN, as there is a Sephora in Downtown Disney, and he KNOWS I'll shop!

Looks like you scaled down to a decent amount!

    1. Hi Laura, Everything looks nice here, but I had a separate bag for skincare, hehe. I had no idea there was a Sephora in Disney... but it must be there for a reason, right? :P

  2. I need to try that NARS mascara - it's been on my wishlist for some time and it's good to know that it's waterproof! I also want Revlon Sweet Tart :) As for traveling, it depends on the location and length of time I'll be away, as well as the occasions; if it's for work or for play, for example. I try to keep the bag trimmed down, though, as I hate carrying lots of stuff! I like your Bobbi Brown brush case - I think I need one!

    1. Hi Laurie, I really like the NARS mascara. I had mixed feelings initially, but it actually performs well for me. It doesn't say waterproof, but I don't find any running down my eyes in the shower. If anything it's too hard to remove! The brush case was a splurge, but I've used it every single trip :)

  3. I just got the NARS Smudge Proof Eye Primer and it is AMAZING! I'm so glad I have it because nothing else seems to work for me! Great post, as always! :)

    1. Hi Amy, Thanks! I've been favoring it recently too. I still have <3 for UDPP though!

  4. I'm pretty bad at paring down my makeup for travelling (but what if I want to wear purple eyeshadow?!), with the exception of when I recently went to New York. The Naked Palette is such a great product to bring on a trip, no?

    1. Hi Dani, the Naked palettes seem to have been invented for this purpose. I don't know what I'd do without them! I know what you mean about the purple eyeshadow though... definitely went through a lot of that!

  5. Ahhh your sunnies are so cute! I've been looking for circular sunglasses that fit my face (and are cute at the same time) for so long! :O

You're such a smart packer! You got all the necessities down but you were still left with choices. So smart! The Maybelline Dream Bouncy blushes are really great, I have the Plum Wine one. It's so fun to poke at, haha!

    1. Hi Maggie, Thank you! It's so hard to find good sunglasses; I think it takes at least 20 pairs tried on before I can find one that's ok! Plum wine is one of the few I don't have! The bouncy feeling is fun, I admit. Sadly, at this point, most of mine have lost the bounce :P

Those Maybelline Bouncy Blushes I must try now that my blush ban is over!
Nice paired down makeup bag Dovey! Great choices. When I went to Disneyland, I didn't bring any eyeshadows really, as being out all day and in the heat I know from past trips there that they just wouldn't last. I just tend to wear waterproof eyeliners when I'm someplace warm.

    1. Hi Tracy, I don't end up wearing much makeup when on vacation somewhere warm either. I have to constantly remind myself of this when packing!

  9. I really loved this post! Especially the Richard Scarry-style labled layout of your cosmetics - that is like makeup porn for me, I just love it! Please do more product pics in this format :D

  11. Inexpensive sunglasses are a must for avoiding breakdowns after, leaving them on the tube, sitting on them, running them over with my bike.........

I mostly take cream products when flying- they are less likely to be trashed than powder and work better in the sun. For my recent holiday make-up was bronzey, highlightery goodness inspired by Jess from Getting Cheekys 'Inspired by Greek mythology' post. Mac Paint Pot in Indianwood, Nars tinted moisturiser, Nars cream eyeshadow in Mykonos, Nars South Beach & Luxor multiples, and some Benefit Bad Girl mascara.

    1. Hi Mopsy, well put! There are so many sad fates for glasses... Hopefully my new ones will last longer! I'm imagining the look you're describing and it sounds wonderful! I loved the Greek Mythology post too :)

  13. Concur on NARS Sheer Glow and UD's liquid liner (I also have Perversion). I have to admit, that while I can pack clothes really well for a trip (as in, pared down), I'm not so great when it comes to makeup :S I want to bring everything! I think you did an excellent job here Dovey, I should take pointers from you :)

    1. Hi Toyarosie, we must have similar taste :) I'm not the best at paring down clothing though... I would bring a caravan with me everytime if I could!

  14. Don't you tend to prefer soft, nudey lipsticks? Revlon Sweet Tart is quite a departure from that! I bet it looked spectacular with your beautiful coloring.

I am very impressed with your collection. Great picks! It's SO HARD to pare down, whether it's clothes, shoes, or makeup.

  15. Just came back from Chicago and took my Naked 2 too! It was so hard condensing, wasn't it? Love your picks, Dovey. :)
