MARC JACOBS Beauty Style Eye-Con No.3 Plush Shadow in The Mod (112) review + comparison swatches

I've been anticipating the new MARC JACOBS Beauty collection at Sephora ever since I caught wind of it several months ago! It's been fun reading up on the latest, as the first reviews trickle into the blogosphere. Of course, I've been playing around with some shiny new samples of MARC JACOBS Beauty products myself, and have a review of MARC JACOBS Beauty Style Eye-Con No.3 Plush Shadow in The Mod (112) to share with you today!

The MARC JACOBS Beauty Style Eye-Con No.3 Plush Shadow trio comes packaged in a nylon sleeve (see above). A foam-tip eyeshadow applicator is also included. There's no tray in which to store the applicator (for aesthetic reasons I gather); it just slips into the pouch alongside your eyeshadow.

The eyeshadow case is a shiny mid-weight black case with a mirrored lid. To open it, you press a silver button release. There's a black disposable plastic protector (not pictured) included inside. I know some people toss plastic protectors after purchase, but I like to keep them to keep powder off the mirrors.

MARC JACOBS Beauty 'The Mod' has three colors that combine beautifully for a nice smoky eye. The white is shimmery and just slightly sheer. The black is richly pigmented and has a visible shimmer. The pale lavender-grey has a soft, non-frosty sheen.

I found that the eyeshadow formula was different from other shadows in my collection. The texture leans a bit soft and is easy to pick up with a brush. The eyeshadow formula does feel a bit thicker and more moisturizing (as opposed to dry or powdery) - perhaps this is what the eponymous 'plush' refers to. Overall, the colors I have go on smoothly.

Ive compared MARC JACOBS Style Eye-Con in 'The Mod' 112 to other colors in my personal collection so that you can get a better idea of the nuances in each shade. The white in The Mod is lighter and whiter than Urban Decay Virgin (reviewed here).  Both the black in The Mod and Urban Decay Blackout (reviewed here) are strong blacks; you can see how the slight shimmer stands out in the former. I've compared the greyed purple of The Mod to one of my favorite shadows, NARS 413 BLKR single eyeshadow (reviewed here). You can see how the former is brighter and less taupe than the latter.

I'm really enjoying having MARC JACOBS Beauty Style Eye-Con No.3 Plush Shadow in The Mod (112) ($42) in my makeup collection, as it's the trio that I would have picked for my smoky-shadow-loving self. I'll have to play around and get used to the formula a bit, as it's different from what I'm used to; I'm also looking forward to seeing how it mixes with the other eyeshadows in my stash. In the meantime, I'm hoping to check out the MARC JACOBS Style Eye-Con No.7 palette in Lolita next time I stop by Sephora!

Thanks for reading! Did you pick up anything from the MARC JACOBS Beauty collection? What has stood out for you so far?

Love, Dovey.

    1. Hi Pamela,

Thanks so much! I don't know at this point whether MARC JACOBS will be available everywhere, though I would hope so! It seems like a pretty major launch. Enjoy your stay in Paris, that sounds amazing!

  2. hi dovey! i found your blog several months ago and, i really enjoy reading it! i was surprised to see a huge tester unit devoted to marc jacobs at my local sephora as i live in a small city (cincinnati).i really was overwhelmed and didn't have much time so, i passed it by. your blog is the first i've read about "the trios" in his collection. so far, i haven't read great things about his "larget set of shadows". i read your comment in "best things in beauty" (i hope it's ok to add this, if not please erase). but, i agreed it's definitely time for me to buy something new. i'm looking for neutral but beautiful colors to wear on the job site. although i love the many different offerings from dior, etc. everything seems to "evening and party-like" for me. i will definitely go back and look at this line again. i saw some beautiful light and neutral lip colors. thankyou for the great review! xo.

    1. Hi Wendy,

Thanks for the sweet comment! I'm happy you took the time to stop by (and Best Things in Beauty is one of my favorite reads as well!) I'm def. hoping to check out more products in person, as I still have the itch for something new lately! :-)

  3. Thanks for the review, Dovey! I'm not entirely sure we'll get the line here, but I've definitely seen some stuff I'd like to swatch! This particular trio is probably not for me because it's rather cool-toned, but I'd love to see the other pieces you're going to review!

    1. Hi Sunny,

I hope the collection makes it overseas! I noticed a few really pretty warm toned palettes as well; Mod is a bit cool / dramatic and will probably get more wear from me in the cooler months :-)

  4. Thanks for the review! I think I like the packaging a lot; especially since the shades are different sizes in the compact. I think it's fun & different :)
We don't have the line here (yet?), but I really would like to purchase some things! This trio isn't really for me since I like warmer shades.. But I like how it shows the good quality! I'll have to look into it :-)

  8. Thanks for the review. This looks like a great basic trio to have. The black looks nicely pigmented and the gray is a pretty tone. I also like the little pouch it comes with! :)

  9. The Mod is the perfect name for this palette. MJ must have been channeling icon Peggy Moffitt when he put this selection of colors together. She was one of the ultimate "Swingin' Sixties" mod models and was known for her kabuki-esque makeup and shining cap of black hair. For a period of time in the mid-sixties, white, black and shades of gray were the dominant eyeshadow colors, but the look at that time was very graphic as opposed to smoky. It was edgy in the extreme.

    1. Hi Eileen, I loved your insight and imagery here --- it makes me want to browse photography from that era! I can also see how it fits in with MARC JACBOBS' line overall :)

    2. Definitely take a look at the models from that Mod era: Jean Shrimpton (stunningly gorgeous), Twiggy (interesting mix of femininity and androgyny), Peggy Moffitt (everyone's favorite "club girl"), etc. Intense eyes, barely there lips and cheeks, sculpted cheekbones--it was quite a departure from the ubiquitous pastel eyeshadows and red lips of the late fifties. I love looking at retro makeup looks and, in this case, the Mod look was one I actually wore :-)

    3. Hi Eileen,

I've been browsing the mod '60s thanks to your suggestions --- how inspiring! (I'm typically partial to intense eyes and light lips over retro reds as well). Twiggy is an icon that I've long loved, but the new-to-me images of Shrimpton and Moffitt are so gorgeous as well!
