CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Lip Color in La Câline review + swatches

As the autumn chill descends upon the windy city, I've been reaching for the richer, thicker garments in my wardrobe, à la woolen knits and fleece. Likewise, I've been favoring richer lip textures to complement my toasty togs, like Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet lip color in La Câline!

If my French serves me correctly, La Câline translates to 'The Cuddly'. It's a rather fitting descriptor for a velvet finish lip color, don't you think? The muted red-pink lays down rich pigment in one swipe and has a soft matte finish, as suggested by its 'velvet' texture.

CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet in La Câline is a warm, muted reddish pink. I've drawn up some comparison swatches to give you a better idea of the nuances in CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet in La Câline. It's worth noting the swatches may be a bit darker in person. Too Faced Cinnamon Kiss (see all Too Faced La Creme swatches here) is the most similar, although it's glossy and brighter in tone. Bobbi Brown Brownie Lip Color is similar in intensity, but much browner. Bobbi Brown Blondie Pink Lip Color is lighter, more beige, and less red-pink. Finally, NARS Dolce Vita lipstick (reviewed here) is sheerer and less red-pink than La Câline.

CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet in La Câline is a beautiful basic color to tint your lips in cool weather . I'm thinking it's going to fit in well with my 'cuddly' sweaters in the upcoming months! I really enjoy the finish of the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet formula; I only wish it was available in more colors, especially those on the lighter end of the spectrum!

Thanks for reading! Have you tried any colors from the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet line? What pieces from Chanel Beauty have you been loving lately?

Love, Dovey.

  1. Hey Dovey, this shade is so you! It's very wearable and feminine. I've tried two of these so far. While L'Impatiente from last year's holiday collection didn't work too well for me, I fell in love with La Favorite (which is a coral and one of the best I own)! I've been reaching for Chanel cream blushes very often since I got them. They blend and last so well!

  5. La Câline is the color I selected last year when I finally decided I had to give the velvet matte look a go. Unfortunately, the formula is very drying on my old lips and so I had to use it with a rich lip balm which sort of defeated the velvet look :-P That didn't stop me from wearing and enjoying it, though. It just needed a bit of TLC. My La Câline and my La Mer lip balm became BFFs! LOL

I love to switch colors, textures, and finishes with the changing seasons. As the earth in its orbit moves closer or further from the sun and as the earth's axis tilts towards or away from the sun, the very quality of our light changes. Add to that things like the shifting weather patterns, the altitude at which we live, the seasonal colors in nature which surround and reflect their light upon us, etc. and it makes no sense to expect colors to look the same on us or have the same appeal all year round. Artists have always known the importance and power of light when selecting their pigments. Since all of us who wear makeup are artists to a certain degree, why would the quality of the light be any less important when choosing our shades? So, yes, I definitely enjoy finding those perfect seasonal colors.

    1. Hi Eileen,

It sounds like you made La Câline work for you, albeit with a little La Mer! I really enjoyed your astronomical approach for explaining the shifting colors; the idea of perception is definitely one I'll have to carry with me as I select seasonal shades :-)
