Benefit Watt's Up! Luminzer / Highlighter review + swatches

With the invention of the incandescent light bulb, a simple carbon filament on a current, Thomas Edison lit up the modern world! Though Edison was not the first to invent a light bulb, his model (US Patent 223898) was the first to be commercially practical.

Today, I'm sharing my thoughts on Benefit Watt's Up?, an aptly named, light bulb festooned highlighter that, like its inspiration, adds a glow to your face round the clock! I've been playing around with this lovely Benefit Watt's Up? mini, thanks to its inclusion in this year's Sephora birthday set.

Incidentally, the light bulb pictured here happens to be from my vanity!
Benefit Watt's Up is a cream to powder highlighter that imparts a champagne glow. I've made some comparison swatches of Watt's Up next to some of the highlighters in my collection. Bobbi Brown Beige Shimmer Brick is the most similar and also has a champagne glow, though it is a bit more golden. Guerlain Terracotta Sun In The City (reviewed here) is a warm gold; you can see that Watt's Up is more champagne in comparison. NARS Copacabana multiple (reviewed here) is much lighter, whiter, and a bit cooler in tone.

Of the delightful retro references in the brand's makeup line, Benefit Watt's Up? is undoubtedly my favorite. The champagne sheen is gorgeous, plus the nod to Edison's 'bright idea' is enough to make this science-loving gal glow!

Thanks for reading! Have you tried Benefit Watt's Up? What are your favorite highlighters? What Benefit products would you recommend?

Love, Dovey.

  1. My favorite highlighter of the moment is Buxom Divine Goddess Luminizer. A close second is theBalm Mary Lou-Manizer. From Benefit I like their Creaseless Cream Shadows in both Birthday Suit and Skinny Jeans. I also like their BadGal Mascara, but only the waterproof version. I think I need to give Watt's Up another chance.

  2. It's so gold! Which I bet looks awesome on you Dovey! I haven't been using highlighters lately-I feel like they emphasize my cheek wrinkles too much haha!

  4. What a cute little mini version of Watt's Up. :) I like that it is a great neutral gold, without yellow or brassy tones.

  5. Hey Dovey, I keep hearing great things about this one, but I really haven't checked it out yet! My favorite highlighter is the Chanel one from this spring. Liquid-highlighter wise, Becca Opal. The only Benefit product I seem to really like is the Creaseless Cream Shadows. I have Birthday Suit and Skinny Jeans. Both are gorgeous!

  6. I like that it's gold, actually! My current go-to highlighter is MAC's Whisper of Gilt, which is also gold. I feel like the white highlighters are maybe a little too pale for my already pale self, haha!

  7. Hey, that light bulb is made in Korea. :>

Watt's Up! is a great highlighter. I love that Sephora made it a birthday gift as even the small tube is going to last quite a while. (Happy birthday, Dovey!)

  8. I tried to use this a couple of times as I got it in the birthday kit... but it does not work for my lovely NW43 skin. It makes me look shiny and ashy at the same time, not a good look.

  9. I am a big fan of this highlighter, I am very pale and it works wonderfully with my skin tone. I like the way it stands out but still remains quite subtle, compared to my other highlighters at least!

  13. i like something with a bit of pink and silver like copacabana, but i find this benefit highlighter very attractive. champagne color virtually is flattering on any complexion.
i think stila has the "wattage" color code system, too. :)
