Foundation swatches - NARS, Chanel, and MUFE

I decided to post a set of liquid foundation comparison swatches and brief reviews using the foundations and samples I currently have in my collection. I hope that this will be helpful for someone looking for comparison swatches for NARS, Chanel, or Make Up Forever foundations. Keep in mind that the finish of each is different, so even if the swatch may appear similar, the wear may different. I've used fairly thick layers of each and given each time to become mostly dry.

NARS Sheer Glow foundation
Notes: The finish is medium-full and absorbs oil pretty well. The NARS range foundations all have a yellow base.. The finish is glowy and looks good in photographs. There is no sunscreen. See my past review here.
04 Deauville -peach undertones
05 Fiji - orange-yellow undertones
06 Ceylan - yellow undertones

Chanel Perfection Lumiere foundation
Notes: The coverage is medium-full and the finish is more matte. See my review here. Note that the colors don't match up well with the corresponding shades in Vitalumiere Aqua.
B10 - clean yellow undertones
B20 - orange undertones

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation
Notes: This has slightly more coverage than a tinted moisturizer. I don't like to wear this when my skin is blemished since it doesn't hide much. It's very comfortable and lightweight. See my past review here.
B10 - peach undertones
B20 - beige undertones

Make Up Forever HD foundation
Notes: This is full coverage. It can accentuate dry skin. It does look good in photographs, as promised. The trick is finding the right shade. Flesh (118) is quite beige. The next shade down 117 Marble was a significantly lighter clean yellow when I swatched it in-store.
118 Flesh  - beige undertones

Thanks for reading!

Love, Dovey.

    1. Hi J, YAY, I'm so glad they were useful. I'm still confused as to which I am. I think it changes depending on the season. Sometimes I feel orange, sometimes peach, sometimes yellow.

    1. AHhh, I was so excited about them. Unfortunately they have chemical sunscreen which I'm allergic to so I will admire from afar. You?

  4. I like anything matte. So Chanel will work for me. Too bad it's so expensive.

    1. I agree, especially with Perfection Lumiere! It's the reason I'm hesitating on getting a second shade.

    1. Hi Jess--- aw, what a bummer. I'll definitely need to try darker shades come summer and will try to repost my findings!

  8. Ooh, interesting to see them compared directly! I loved the MUFE HD but they don't have a good color match for my skin. Same with Laura Mercier Silk Creme... sigh. I also realized when I look back at pictures of Perfection Lumiere that the shade I have doesn't match my neck (but I recall thinking it looked perfect in person). I haven't worn it in a month b/c I am so crazy about my L'oreal foundation.

    1. Hi Sarah, it was interesting to me too! I really had no idea how they compared even though I used them myself. Sometimes blog swatching is actually quite helpful. The MUFE colormatch is an issue for me too. I feel a bit too beige in 118. I might be able to do 117 now that I'm paler, but I don't think I 'need' it :o) As for PL, it's such a tricky color--- I think it might have matched in person even though not in the photo (even if that makes sense). It's awesome that you have a foundation you love now.

  9. Thank you so much for this, Dovey! I'm still kind of torn now, though, haha. Based on your swatches, though, and the fact that Chanel PL B20 is practically perfect for me, I'd say that Ceylan is prolly my best bet with the NARS, as you've said. Yay! You're my hero. :)

    1. Hi Larie, yay! I'm feeling pressured now--- I hope I'm not misleading you (I would crawl into a hole if that was the case!) I'd love to hear what you choose.

  10. I don't wear any of these foundations... BUT NOW I WANT TO. Isn't it crazy? I also wish I was a match for your skin tone so that all this work you put into this post would come in handy. :)

    1. LOL--- funny how that works. Whenever I see foundation I feel compulsed to want it too. I think I'm constantly on the quest for the perfect finish and color. Even as I write I'm contemplating two new colors to add. Eep! I need reductionista powers...

  12. nice comparisons! i like nars sheer glow but chanel foundations never work for me! it's super weird, they highlight pores and bumps that aren't there without makeup! maybe one day they will work.... the mufe bottle seems potentially messy... and did you see Nars came out with a pump for foundations? I hated that it was just an open bottle...

    1. I agree on the no-pump format! Which reminds me... I need to get one!

  14. girl i was looking for a post like this! you are a champ! I think i've decided on deauville now thanks to you, as ceylan looks too light so I won't bother with a sample :) I wish there was something in between deauville and fiji - that would be perfect for me! sorry for the long msg but I've been on the fence so for so long about which shade to get! in other words.. thank you!! :) :)
