Sephora Favorites : Bottled Dreams Fragrance Sampler For Her (2013) review + photos

Years ago, when I was starting my journey into the world of perfume, I picked up a Sephora fragrance sampler for myself. Fragrance samplers typically contain several spritzers or deluxe minis for you to try and a voucher to redeem for a full-size version of your favorite. They're pretty great deals too; the kits often cost less than buying a full size bottle!

With that in mind, you can imagine my delight at receiving Sephora Favorites : Bottled Dreams Fragrance Sampler For Her, their latest fragrance sampler, courtesy of Sephora. It's packed with deluxe mini samples of six new scents to choose from, as well as a bonus bottle of Sephora by OPI nail polish. I was quite pleased with the selection within; the perfumes should please many noses! I've written a brief review of each below to give you an idea of what to expect:

Juicy Couture La La is a fun and flirty combination of crisp fruits and rich white florals. The fresh fruits include apple, mandarin, and redcurrant (a note I love). The whites include orange blossom and lily of the valley, which are perfect for spring. Balenciaga Florabotanica is an unusual green floral that smells of sweet mint and light rose. I'm quite a fan; I have a full bottle in my collection already. The scent surprisingly long lasting; the green is slightly earthy and hemp-like (as opposed to grass-like). Marchesa Parfum d'Extase is a delicate combination of iris and amber. This scent is soft and feminine; it's a good choice for those who prefer scents with a more understated elegance.

Gucci Guilty (see my review here) is a sensual combination of peach, lilac, and pepper. It's a smooth, warm, and alluring scent. Lancôme La vie est belle (see my review here) is an iris gourmand. The combination of airy florals with a vanilla amber base is quite delicious and pleasantly complex. Coach Love is a smooth warm floral. The base notes, musk and patchouli, have more weight than some of the other fragrances here. The florals are a blend of jasmine, violet, and gardenia.

The Sephora Favorites : Bottled Dreams Fragrance Sampler For Her includes a little booklet with promotional photos and a short blurb on each fragrance. As a bonus, the set comes with Sephora by OPI Nail Color in What Aura Gonna Wear?, which is a vibrant pink polish. I've made some comparison swatches below to give you a better idea of the color. (As you can see I'm quite fond of bright pinks!).

The Sephora Favorites : Bottled Dreams Fragrance Sampler For Her ($50 for $125 value) is a cute coffret of perfumes that's a perfect gift for moms (after all, Mother's day is right around the corner) or for anyone interested in exploring perfume. This limited edition fragrance kit may fly off shelves - it has a selection of popular scents, a bonus nail polish, and a voucher for a full size bottle of perfume. As for me, I'm looking forward to figuring out which perfume I'll be redeeming my coupon for! (Right now I'm leaning towards Juicy Couture La La or Marchesa d'Extase).

Thanks for reading! Have you ever tried a Sephora Fragrance sampler set? Which fragrance would you choose? Which one do you think I should choose?

Love, Dovey.

Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 Lacquer collection review + comparison swatches

Summer nail colors are here --- which is always a cause for excitement on Cute and Mundane! Even in Chicago's cool climate, I can feel that espadrille season is just around the corner! With that in mind, I can't think of a better way to celebrate sunny days and balmy breezes than with a new infusion of nail polish. I've been enjoying the Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 Lacquer collection all week, courtesy of Butter London, and I'm excited to share my review and comparison swatches with you today! The Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 Lacquer collection consists of six summer themed polishes with varying colors and finishes including Sunbaker, Champers, Poole, Bobby Dazzler, Marbs, and Bit Faker.

Butter London Sunbaker is a radiant red-orange shimmer. Like its namesake, it evokes the heat of the sun!  Butter London Champers is a champagne shimmer. It's a gorgeous, bubbly color --- exactly what you'd expect from a glass of champagne!
Butter London Poole is a beautiful robin's egg blue creme that also channels the limpid glint of shallow water. Butter London Bobby Dazzler is a silver metallic polish that has ever-so-slight gold tones mixed in; this makes this traditionally cool color quite wearable.

Butter London Marbs is a warm yellow-gold shimmer that leans a bit bronze. Golds can sometimes be hard for me to wear, but this was quite flattering against my skintone. Butter London Bit Faker is a stunning bronze glitter on a dark brown base. The glitter is quite dense, it only requires two thick coats for complete opacity.

To give you a better idea of the nuances in each of the Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 shades, I've drawn up some comparison swatches above with other nail polish colors from my collection. You can see that Butter London Sunbaker is a more intense glowing red orange than SpaRitual Kindness and Essie Chubby Cheeks. Butter London Champers is a beautiful champagne shimmer that is very close to, but slightly warmer than SpaRitual Sun Salutation. It is, however, cooler and less coppery than SpaRitual Copper. You can appreciate from the swatches how Butter London Poole is a pool blue that lies in between the turquoise of Sephora by OPI Ocean Love Potion and light blue of OPI What's With the Cattitude?.

Butter London Bobby Dazzler is a shining silver that leans slightly warm. It's a little warmer than the blue tinged silver of SpaRitual Silver, but cooler than the more yellow-toned Sephora by OPI Queen of Everything. Butter London Marbs is an warm bronzed yellow gold. You can see it has more bronze tones than the yellow beige gold of NARS Versailles. It has similar tones to the glitter in China Glaze I Herd That. Butter London Bit Faker has a dark brown base that's a bit darker than NARS Bad Influence, and bronze glitter that's a bit warmer than OPI San Tan-Tonio.

Here's a final look at swatches of the Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 collection!

The Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 collection ($15 each) is a stunning collection of nail lacquers. There's a big dose of warmth here; you almost feel the summer sun reflected in them! I love how each color is unexpected, yet well nuanced as to make them very wearable. It's tough to choose a favorite, as I've been enjoying every single color --- however if I had to choose, the fiery red orange of Butter London Sunbaker and the watery blue of Butter London Poole would be my picks! Butter London is available at Sephora, Ulta, and other beauty retailers.

Thanks for reading! Which of the Butter London Summer Holiday 2013 colors are your favorites? What Butter London nail polishes have you picked up recently?

Love, Dovey.

BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic Eau de Parfum review

April has been a very fragrant month for me. Like the unfurling petals brought about by the months' showers, my interest in fresh fragrances has burgeoned as well. A number of new bottles have graced my dresser, waiting to be shared on Cute and Mundane! Most recently though, I've been enjoying a sample of BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic Eau de Parfum!

Bon Chic means 'good style' in French, and draws reference from the brand's name. If you know your fashion trivia, BCBG is actually an acronym of the French saying Bon Chic, Bon Genre (Good Style, Good Attitude)! BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic is the second fragrance from BCBG Max Azria. It's festooned with the same blossoming petaled stopper as its predecessor; but the bottle and fluid are golden yellow, as opposed to the original pink.

Notes: Black Raspberry, Mango, Asian Pear, Pink Peony, Violet, Orange Blossom, Soft Woods, Vanilla, Cashmere Musk
BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic is a smooth, sweet fruity floral scent. It opens with juicy sweet mango. The Asian pear follows next; it has a touch of creaminess that you'd expect from a pear, but also a crisp watery aspect as well. The pear is joined by the raspberry; the two marry well and linger throughout most of the fragrance, along with a light vanilla. While I wouldn't say the florals star in the scent, they do have a significant presence. Petals of peony open up the fragrance and make it more feminine. Orange blossom is present in smaller doses; violet even less so. The base is relatively light as well; a clean dry wood is most evident, while the bottom is rounded out by a light musk.

BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic ($55 for 1.7oz) recalls the delicious ripe fruits of summer, bolstered by feminine floral blooms. There is considerable sweetness from the mango, pear, and raspberry, while peony adds an enveloping floral presence. Light vanilla, wood, and musk make for a pleasant base. Overall, it's a nice scent for those who enjoy optimistic fruity floral fragrances. BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic can be purchased from Ulta, Macy's, and other fine department stores for Mother's Day and beyond.

Thanks for reading! Have you tried BCBG Max Azria Bon Chic? What fruity floral fragrances are you enjoying lately?

Love, Dovey

LUSH Little Green Bag review + swatches

For Earth Day, I'll be indulging in the LUSH Little Green Bag, thanks to the folks at LUSH Cosmetics! Inside, you'll find four solid bath and body products and one travel tin --- all wrapped up inside a  delightful leaf-patterned organic cotton scarf. LUSH solid products are eco-friendly for a number of reasons; they are preservative-free, packaging-free, and lighter, which means less energy is required to ship products. Of course, this makes them easier for you to carry around on your travels as well!

LUSH Sexy Peel Soap is an fresh citrus soap that I can't get enough of! True to its name, it's full of peels; it has a mixture of orange, lemon, and lime peels to give it its zingy scent. LUSH Each Peach Massage Bar is a citrusy massage bar. It has moisturizing mango kernel oil and cocoa butter. The uplifting scent comes from the inclusion of lime, mandarin, and orange essential oils. As you might expect, it pairs perfectly with Sexy Peel soap. Massage bars can, obviously, be used for massage, but they're great for regular moisturization as well. LUSH Mini Sugar Scrub is a solid scrub that's great for getting rid of unwanted bumps and cellulite. It also contains fragrant ginger and fennel to stimulate circulation!

As you might know by now, I'm a big fan of LUSH Shampoos; I've been using their solid bars for years (see my reviews of LUSH Jumping Juniper and LUSH Seanik). They're super sudsy and great for clarifying the scalp. I've been wanting to try LUSH Squeaky Green Shampoo Bar for some time now, so I'm excited to see it in this set. It has rosemary, nettle, peppermint, and tea tree oils for treating and cleansing  stressed scalps. It's also accompanied by a LUSH Shampoo Bar Tin. I actually have a couple tins already; they're necessities if you like LUSH shampoo bars. The bars are perfect for travel and storage. You never have to worry about weight, liquids, or spillage!

The LUSH Little Green Bag ($25.95) is a hit for me, as I'm already a big fan of LUSH's travel friendly, preservative-free solid formulas. It has everything you would need for a shower routine and would be a nice set for those looking to get into LUSH products, or even for seasoned LUSHies like me!

Thanks for reading! Have you tried any of LUSH's solid products? What are your current favorite LUSH products? How are you celebrating Earth Day?

Love, Dovey.

LUSH Sun Eau de Cologne Gorilla Perfume review

LUSH recently launched a brand new selection of Gorilla perfumes inspired by art, music, memories, people, and stories. These perfumes take inspiration from real experiences, as opposed to industry ideals. There are a myriad of original scents, in all shapes, sizes, and smells. Recently, I've been delighting in LUSH Sun Eau de Cologne thanks to the folks at LUSH, and have a sunny review to share with you today!

LUSH Sun is a deliciously optimistic scent. The idea for it was born when in-house perfumer Mark Constantine dreamed of a bright yellow sun on a lollipop stick (hence the imagery on the packaging!) It's a cheery scent that's meant to remind us of warmer climates and happy memories. (In Mark's case, it reminds him of driving down the New Jersey turnpike to the tune of Simon and Garfunkel).

Notes: Tangerine, Orange, Mimosa, Sandalwood
LUSH Sun smells of sweet orange combined with a deep sandalwood. It opens with a very juicy tangerine, which quickly transitions into a sweet, almost candied, orange. The sandalwood is immediately noticeable, as if it's the board against which the orange is being cut. It's not a shy sandalwood; the wood has nice depth and some of the earthy darkness of real wood. The combination of citrus and sandalwood wears for quite some time. The components sound deceptively simple, however the summation leads to a pretty cool scent effect!

LUSH Sun Eau de Cologne ($14.95 for 0.3 oz) certainly does channel the effect of a sunny orange lollipop on a stick. If you're a citrus fragrance lover (man or woman) I definitely recommend a sniff; the citrus and sandalwood combine for a novel and delicious scent experience. Thanks for reading! Have you tried LUSH Gorilla perfumes? Do you like citrus scents?

Love, Dovey.

Inspired by Renoir (Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando)

It seems that spring has finally sprung, the changing of the seasons heralded by the blooming of daffodils and dandelions along the city sidewalks. This burst of springtime brings with it a milestone for Cute and Mundane - we've just passed one million page views! So, in celebration, I'd like to share a reflection on beauty and art in this latest edition of the Inspired by Art series- and who better to guide this reflection than impressionist master, Pierre Auguste Renoir!

Renoir was born into a French working-class family in 1841. At an early age, he took a job at a porcelain factory to help support his family. It was there that his talent for the arts was first noticed, and he became tasked with painting intricate designs on fine china. In his early twenties Renoir began studying art formally in Paris, where he met fellow impressionists, among them Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. Unlike his contemporaries however, Renoir never had the benefit of family affluence or wealthy patronage, and often struggled to afford even the basic paints he needed for his work. Perhaps this is why Renoir painted (and was often criticized for) overly idyllic scenes – scenes that shirked the bitter realities of life, exchanging them for utopian daydreams. Renoir himself once said, referring to his paintings: “There are enough ugly things in life for us not to add to them.”

Renoir's beautiful 1879 painting Acrobats at the Cirque Fernando is a shining example of the dreamy aspect of his work. The painting depicts a pair of happy, innocent young girls collecting oranges tossed by the audience after a successful performance. In reality, the two girls, Francisca and Angelina Wartenberg, are aged 17 and 14, much older and more mature than the painting suggests. Furthermore, it almost goes without saying that circuses (especially of that era) were certainly not innocent and playful places. We could easily write off the painting as a gross embellishment of the truth. Perhaps what we should take away instead, however, is that Renoir managed to take a place as dark and exploitative as the circus, and find a nugget of beauty within it to cultivate and share with the world.

My Renoir inspired look is focuses on yellow, which is present throughout the painting, both in pure and mixed form. Yellow is always a great color for April (think daffodils and rain boots), however it seems to be especially trending this year considering recent offerings from MAKE UP FOR EVER and NARS. To this end, I've included MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow #2 Yellow, a pigmented yellow. I think yellow can look nice in small doses and, as you can see from the circus floor, it mixes quite nicely with tans. The same concept can be applied to eyes with Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in Cement. Yellow also plays nicely with the pale pink-white of the acrobat's skin, which I've represented with Bobbi Brown eyeshadow in Navajo.

To add definition in this Renoir inspired look, one can use the classic dark brown of the acrobats' hair and eyes. Bobbi Brown Black Chocolate (reviewed here) is a nice dark brown liner shade. For more interest, a brilliant blue can be used instead. You might notice that much of the shading in Renoir's painting is done with a dark blue. My favorite blue is NARS Outremer (reviewed here). An alternative color to pair with the yellow would be an orange, such as MAC Optimistic Orange.

Nail colors are a great way to incorporate the same optimistic yellows and whites of the acrobats' costumes. China Glaze Happy Go Lucky is a bright  decorative yellow, like the acrobat's shoes. Sephora by OPI IM Beauty is a daintier yellow like that of the costume trim. SpaRitual Transcend (reviewed here) is a pale yellow white, like the fabric.

Alternatively, colors from the surrounding could be used to color tips and toes. Sephora by OPI Going Nude Eh? is a pale tan like that of the floor. Sephora by OPI Hi Def is a bright orange. Sephora by OPI Blue Grotto channels the blue of of the background crowd.

Finally, my Renoir based look wouldn't be complete without a scent to match! For the past couple of Inspired by Art posts, I've been incorporating perfume to quite literally add another 'layer' to the experience. I was particularly inspired by the tissue wrapped oranges tossed to the acrobats, so I've chosen a couple celebratory orange-family scents. Fan di Fendi Eau de Toilette (reviewed here) has tangerine citrus notes, with florals to add a playful whimsy like the acrobats' ruffly outfits, and soft leather, like their yellow boots. A more French option, by one of my favorite perfumers, Jean Claude Ellena, is Hermès Elixir des Merveilles. Elixir des Merveilles is an oriental orange with a delightful round bottle to match!

It's true that Renoir didn't paint a realistic depiction of the Wartenberg sisters. He even went so far as to paint them not from memory, but posed in his studio under natural daylight. (In explanation, Renoir remarked that the circus tent gas lighting “turns faces into grimaces”). What is equally true, however, is that Renoir would have never created such a wonderful work of art had he not seen the beauty hidden in the reality. As beauty enthusiasts, we can take this sentiment to heart; makeup and perfumes may be pleasant to look at and smell, but they aren't what make us beautiful – we've already got true beauty tucked away inside ourselves.

Thanks for reading!

Love, Dovey.

Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum Gift set (2013) review + photos

Lately, my mom has been spending more time exploring new scents and perfumes. She often reports back to me what she's tried --- and whether they've been hits or misses. I love our discussions, as it's fun to get to know her scent preferences and how they compare to mine; they're also a great way for me to covertly collect information on what perfumes she might like for Mother's day (which is right around the corner)!

A couple weeks ago, Mom mentioned that she had discovered Valentino Valentina. With this in mind, you can imagine my delight at receiving the brand new Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum gift set today, courtesy of Valentino Parfums! Thanks to this wonderful coincidence, I now have both the perfect gift for my mom, as well as some gorgeous photos of Valentino Valentina to share with you today!

The Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum gift set is packaged in a beautiful blush pink box topped with a chiffon rosette. It contains a generous 2.7oz Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum and 6.8 oz Valentina Hydrating Body Lotion. Both are full sized products that would typically be sold separately. As you can see below, both have gorgeous three-dimensional detailing with a trio of rosettes.

Notes: Calabrian Bergamot, White Alba Truffle, Amalfi Orange Blossom, Tuberose, Jasmine, Wild Strawberry, Amber, Cedar
Valentino Valentina is an irreverent Italian floral oriental perfume that captures the quest for today's Italian dolce vita. I experience the fragrance as a smooth blend of white florals, strawberry, and vanilla. The bergamot and white truffle add dimension and sophistication to the blend. It's an elegant scent and should please many noses. I've been reaching for my personal bottle quite frequently as of late; I'll be writing a more in-depth review of Valentino Valentina (as well as the new Valentina Assoluto) in the coming days, so be sure to stay tuned!

The Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum gift set ($112 for $160 value) is a breathtakingly beautiful (and beautifully scented) gift that is sure to delight moms come Mother's day. I can't wait to present this to my mom on May 12! Of course, this would be a nice set for any other occasion as well, self gifting included. The Valentina gift set, as well as the Valentina Assoluto gift set, is available at fine department stores nationwide starting April 2013.

Thanks for reading! Have you tried Valentino Valentina Eau de Parfum? Have you given your mother perfume for Mother's Day? If you're a mom, what perfume(s) have you received on Mother's Day?

Love, Dovey.

P.S. Mom, I know you're reading this, but pretend like you didn't see it yet, ok? ;-)

Bobbi Brown Metallic eyeshadow in Mint review + swatches

Every summer I purchase a new mint plant for my apartment perch; the leaves are perfect for use in mojitos, desserts, and tea! I've already written about my love for mint fragrances (see here), so I thought it would only be fitting to devote a post to mint (the color) as well. To that end, I have a review of Bobbi Brown Metallic eyeshadow in Mint to share with you today!

Bobbi Brown eyeshadows are among my favorite eyeshadow formulas, and Bobbi Brown Mint follows in that tradition. The single eyeshadows conveniently pop out and can be used in Bobbi's palettes. The palettes come in multiple sizes --- I have the two, three, and six pan versions. A four pan version is also regularly available as well.

My new mint plant for 2013!
Bobbi Brown Metallic Eyeshadow in Mint is a shimmery light mint green. It has a slightly grey tone, however in the sunlight (seen below) it exudes the light yellow-green warmth of a mint leaf. In the shade, Mint appears cooler. The color is a bit muted when compared with the greens in the Revlon Luscious Quad, but it's much lighter and greener than Bobbi Brown Metallic eyeshadow in Sage.

Bobbi Brown Metallic eyeshadow in Mint is a verdant breath of fresh air. Mint is just as refreshing a color as it is a flavor --- and it adds a nice brightness to my eyes when worn. Overall, I'm happy to have Mint, and look forward to incorporating it into my green routine this year! Thanks for reading! Have you tried Bobbi Brown Mint or other Bobbi Brown eyeshadows? What are your favorite mint green eyeshadows?

Love, Dovey.

P.S. Bobbi Brown Mint starred in my recent Inspired By Art post featuring Van Gogh's Roses!

MAKE UP FOR EVER Remix Tour Chicago - my experience + photos!

Last Saturday I brought my makeup bag to the MAKE UP FOR EVER Remix Tour's stop in Chicago! As I mentioned earlier (see here), the Remix Tour is all about teaching old makeup bags new tricks. Every beauty gets to work one-on-one with a Pro-Artist to make the most of what she already has. I took a bunch of photos so you could experience the Remix tour with me. Enjoy!

The MAKE UP FOR EVER Remix Tour took place in a huge MAKE UP FOR EVER trailer, not in a store. Most of the stations were inside, however there were a couple seats outside.

I was ushered inside to the seating area with sweets and magazines. I of course took an obligatory Dovey-was-here gold Sperry shot!

While waiting, I filled out the face chart below with my current makeup products and checked out some of the photos of beauty lovers who had had their makeup remixed.

A collage of makeover shots also decorated the walls of the mini lounge.

Here's a shot of the inside of the trailer, where everyone got their makeup done by MAKEUP FOR EVER's Pro Artists! The artists at the Remix tour were from all over the U.S. and even Canada.

I was lucky to get paired with Kelly B., who was awesome! She's a MAKE UP FOR EVER Educator and Artistry director who trains and works with artists at a number of Sephora locations in the midwest.

I chose to focus on MAKE UP FOR EVER products in my makeup bag (see some of my stash here), but any brands were welcome at this event. In addition to learning about my own stash, I had the chance to try new colors at the station as well!

During my 30 minute session, we decided to focus on face basics. The MAKE UP FOR EVER products she used on me were : HD Primer #0, Mat Velvet #35, HD Concealer #335 (undereye), Full Cover #7 (face), HD Concealer #310 (highlight).

I learned a bit about the nuances of MAKE UP FOR EVER concealers. The Full Cover formula has a thicker consistency and is convenient for blemishes as it's tough and more waterproof, while the HD Concealer is a bit more emollient and nice to use for the undereye. The lighter shade of the HD concealer can also be used as a subtle highlight!

My favorite part of the session dealt with brows! Kelly went through the brow positioning basics; it's one thing to know the theory... but another to have a pro do it for you. She suggests starting drawing underneath your brows in the middle, near your arch, then work outwards. If you start elsewhere, your line may become rounded and lose the point of arching.

For the eyes, Kelly chose Aqua Cream #2 (Steel). I learned that a fluffy brush or gentle patting can add a gorgeous veil of color.  The look was finished off with Eyeshadow #40 and Aqua Liner #13.

Naturally, I had to get a list of Kelly's favorite products :

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Smoky Lash Mascara
MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Black Cream Eyeliner
MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Brow #25
MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Blush #2 Raspberry
MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Powder

Here's a last look at some of the MAKE UP FOR EVER Stations!

I made a point of enjoying some of the displays before heading out. I wouldn't mind having a MAKE UP FOR EVER lipstick or HD foundation collection that looks like this --- a girl can dream!

... and a final goodbye to the truck. I love MAKE UP FOR EVER's artistry photos!

Overall, I had a great time at the MAKE UP FOR EVER Remix Tour Chicago. It was really one of the best makeovers I've had in a while (thank you Kelly!). By the end, I looked great and learned a lot. It's not often that you have the chance to get educated by talented Pro Artists in an outside-the-counter experience. I definitely recommend stopping by the Remix Tour if you're able to make its final stop in Toronto. For those who couldn't make it to the tour, there's still good news: MAKE UP FOR EVER is partnering will Skillshare (partnership here) to offer free online classes to the public.

Thanks for reading! Did you stop by a MAKE UP FOR EVER Remix Tour? What are your favorite MAKE UP FOR EVER products?

Love, Dovey.
